On Monday, FAMU alumnus and state Sen. Alfred “Al” Lawson formally assumed the leadership mantle for the Florida Senate’s 14-member Democratic Caucus. In doing so, he became only the second African American to carry the title “Senate Minority Leader.”
Lawson began his legislative career as a member of the Florida House in 1982 and, in 2000, won election The Senate.
Throughout his tenure he has been a vigorous, consistent champion for his undergraduate alma mater. His major accomplishments include: securing funds for the Multi-Purpose Teaching Gymnasium and New Development Research School, foiling Florida State University’s attempt to take over the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering, and derailing former FAMU Trustees Chairwoman Challis Lowe’s confirmation.
In an interview with WCTV-6, he outlined a number of priorities for the 2009 legislative session. Expanded health care, environmental protection, and raises for state employees are all high on his list.
