Off topic: Martinez won't seek reelection

The hits keep coming for the scandal-plagued, increasingly irrelevant Republican Party. Now comes word that Mel Martinez—Flordia's rabidly right-wing U.S. Senator, a Bush clone and the former RNC chairman—has decided to retire at the end of his term "to spend more time with his family."
Martinez, who has struggled to boost public support because of his close ties to President George W. Bush, announced today that he will not seek a second term in 2010.
The Republican pushed an immigration reform bill that was unpopular with many in his party, and his seat was widely seen as vulnerable in two years. However, Martinez rejected suggestions he faced difficult re-election prospects in a state won last month by Democrat Barack Obama.
"I've faced much tougher obstacles in my life," Martinez said. "My decision is not based on re-election prospects, but on what on what I want to do with the next eight years of my life."
Dude, stop with all the anti-conservative stuff. Many Rattlers are conservatives themselves (like me).
ReplyDeleteIf it was somehow Rattler related or historic in nature, that would be cool.....
RN, keep calling it like you see it. Nevermind, the one neocon reader.
ReplyDelete11:20 wow! Are you serious? African Americans who put their "party" before their race almost destroyed FAMU,doing the will of good ol' jeb!
ReplyDeleteIn GA just monday a "conservative" said that the state would look at closing two HBCU's and merging them with HWCU's to save money! Save money? The so called conservatives have been anything but over the past 8 years and as soon as it get a little tight they go after the people who have had to make do with the least from day one, Blacks!
And for the record I am no liberal, but what I am is African American before anything!
I think we all could benefit from using clear definition of terms. Conservative is not a "party", all conservatives are not "neocons". All conservatives are not Republicans, all Republicans are not conservative.
ReplyDelete"merging" is not necessarily the same as "closing" Some of the rancor among us would die, if people would take the time to define terms when writing.
And your personal life should have very little to do with the greater good! That is a "conservative" problem. If you want to be heard, you'd drop the notion that being anything, liberal or conservative, as something that should matter to the rest of the nation. Social conservatives are different that economic conservatives right? Well that's spin on the BULL! Conservatism =to conserve. To KEEP things(power)the way the were, are and, have been. Get on compassion the bus. Just because you disagree or wanna hold on to the pennies that you have doesn't mean that you have to be mean and hateful or a thief of hope and opportunity from those who have less. It definitely doesn't ALLOW you to be JUDGEMENTAL. And my fellow Rattlers, that's what the "conservatives" tend to be. I appreciate their service however, I'm hard pressed to come up with outstanding progress for Florida on the grand scale due to said service.
ReplyDeleteThat is not at all what conservatism means. Please do some research.
ReplyDeleteConservatives in this country (of course the term means different things in different countries) generally want a smaller federal government (because our country of course is a Federal Republic rather than a democracy), strong personal rights (even to the extent that it affects the unborn), lower taxes, and state's rights.
Of course, conservatives are prone to stray just like any other political movement.....but that is the simple explanation.
