AD search extended

The Rattlers eagerly awaiting the name of FAMU’s new athletic director will have to wait a bit longer.

In an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat, President James Ammons announced that he is re-opening the application process.

"I want to make certain that we have reached all the talent for this position," Ammons said. "I just want to make sure I have a pool that is broad enough and rich enough to make this important decision."

Interim AD Michael Smith will continue to serve until a permanent hire is made. Ammons said that Smith is free to apply for the permanent job.

In February, Derrick Magee and Mary McElroy were named as finalists for the AD position. Although Ammons did not mention any problems with either candidate, he said he still wants to consider new applicants.

He also emphasized that no one has an “inside tract” to the job.

"It's a national search and it is competitive and it's open," Ammons said. "Nobody has an advantage except the person who has all the qualifications that we are looking for and, at the end of the day, I believe can lead our athletics program."

Can I be the first to say BULLSPIT! This is so sad anyone who saw the initial list of applicants knows that there were four or five OVER QUALIFIED people who could have lead our athletics program! FAMU still operates in the 1900's and Ammons is no different! Why would anyone subject themselves to this process after seeing how the first was handled? I mean come on you name two top people and then do not hire either one? And this is FAMU athletics we are talking not a "Real" athletics program. SAD SAD SAD!!! I will beat a dollar to a dime it will be either the "interim" or someone with FAMU ties via the Board of Trustees, Screwing someone on campus, Momma Daddy Cousin work at FAMU, etc. New Blood, New Ideas, New Hope, Now!!

  2. This is a shame this is how Dr. Ammoms gonna give Mike Smith the AD position. Mike is a great guy but what fundraising experience does he have... The staff there talks a good game but yet they have not delivered. Shame on you Mr. President.

If you required the candidates to not have any of the relationships mentioned above virtually all members of the black community would be eliminated.

  5. You all need to get real and I wish this would be more of a serious place to convene. Unfortunately, since the last administration's exodous, only the vultures and rats are left here to gossip and slander. If anything, this site exposes and highlights why and how FAMU has the issues it does. Some of you are cancers to the FAMU community, which isn't all black nor all local. I know some would connect it perhaps to a Tallahassee mentality, when I was a freshman I'd agree. Maybe it's YOU, Mister and Miss Anonymous. I think that's it, YOU are the BIGGEST problem! Good day.

  6. This shows how incompetent Ammons is.Can't make decisions unless he ask somebody. It's time for Ammons to move on out of the front office and back to Lake Wales. People wake up!His time as President is up.

  7. I agree with casting a wider net. The jacked up committee didn't give him much to choose from. For goodness sake that included Mickey Clayton in the top list of candidates!!! That right there should tell any thinking person that pool was tainted.

  8. 2:30pm give me a break you are clueless I am anonymous. but so are you! So, what is your point again? Furthermore, I actually gave my all to FAMU, but not anymore and if you want a more serious place to convene, then I suggest that you attend a Board of Trustees Meeting. Yet, when I look at FAMU I cant help but be hurt that the College of Love and Charity is now the College of Losers and Crooks. If it is to be changed New People, New Hope. Now!

  9. 8:55, go SIT. YOU'RE CASTING STONES. I gave you nothing that says I'm clueless and I refuse to make this about "me"(a group of Rattlers, actually). Its about FAMU and its legacy strengthening. Further, this is RN, and you're just blowing smoke suggesting I attend a BOT meeting to have any sort of serious or earnest collective dialogue. I'm not in Tallahassee, as most of us aren't. And if you gave up on FAMU, go away! Stop spreading smut without any substance. We aren't beholden to Dr. Ammons and if he's anything like he's painted, he'd be gone. Problem is, your actions amount to a tea-bagger in this instance and I wouldn't wish that on any REAL RATTLER. My anonymity doesn't occur because I don't care or because I'm afraid. If I had personal comments and stones to throw, I'd do it in the open. Respectfully!

  11. To answer your questions 8:21 It is PUBLIC COURT DOCUMENTATION that Mike L. Smith can't handle his own personal finances or his staff in the Aux Srvs dpt which includes Copy Center, Post Office, etc need I say more... However, there are a lot of Kool-aid drinkers on campus under Ammons and more than likely Smith will get the JOB.

  12. I respectfully disagree that FAMU needs an outsider to lead its athletic program. In fact, outsiders have “the sleeping giant” right where it is now, sleeping. Bill Hayes, for whatever you thought of him, was an outsider. Nelson Townsend, although he was at FAMU back in the day, had been gone so long he didn’t know how the school’s support constituencies had changed and absolutely nothing about marketing, sales, and the new revolution in modern day athletics, media. No need to mention all the interim AD's that with all the interim presidents. The last time FAMU’s program operated in the black was under alumnus Ken Riley, who was respected by the FAMU community for his efforts as a head coach and his successful pro football career. Ken was not an outgoing personality, but he was not stupid either. He knew how to work the FAMU based support groups and left the program with a financial surplus. Another successful FAMU AD was Hansel Tookes, one of the best in modern day athletics. Tookes, like Ken, had the respect of the FAMU community, knew and interacted well with it, and was able to rally Rattlers to do innovative and creative new things, i.e. The Florida Classic. In my humble opinion, at a time such as this, FAMU needs someone who can rally alumni; expose the program’s potential to the broader Tallahassee community (its base), yes…engage people who have never been to a FAMU athletic event or seen the Marching “100” in person; then extol the virtues of the program to the global community through the Internet, national television exposure and building business partnerships. FAMU needs someone who fully understands the school’s processes and operating practices, the alumni constituency and the Tallahassee community. FAMU needs someone with state and national ties, and someone who understands how media, marketing and sales can generate new revenue and awaken this giant from its “slumber.” We all know that FAMU athletics is a gold mine. Now it’s time for the university to select someone who can mine the gold.

  13. I don't see how Dr. Ammons will find anyone more qualified than Mrs. McElroy and Mr. Magee. They both are considered the best in their field and McElroy was an AD at a pwc for over 4 years. Mr. Magee while young, is a FAMU alumnus and works at one of the best college programs in the country (Cincinnati - two BCS bowl bids in a row). I believe that both candidates saw how corrupt things are down on the hill and wanted no part of it.
