AJC: Vann is NFL draft sleeper

From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

LeRoy Vann was "Mr. Everything" for the Florida A&M Rattlers.

In addition to returning punts and kickoffs, he played wide receiver, running back and cornerback. But his return skills have caught the attention of NFL teams. He's projected as a middle- to late-round draft pick when the league holds its draft Thursday to Saturday.

Vann, who was not invited to the NFL scouting combine, has had private workouts for Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. San Francisco sent coach Mike Singletary to Florida A&M's pro day on March 18.

Vann, who's considered one of the small-college sleepers in the draft, does a good job of setting up a return and then making a slashing cut to the open field. He returned two punts for touchdowns against Howard and Winston-Salem State last season.

"I just see lanes," Vann said. "I have to be patient, and I'm not really scared. Most of the returners are scared when the ball is in the air and the ball is coming down.

The Rattlers' playing field was wet and muddy during Vann's pro-day workout, and his times reflected the slow track. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds and the 20-yard shuttle drill in 3.96 seconds.

Vann believes he can add value to an NFL team.

"I can give a team great field position, and I can go the distance," Vann said. "I can score anytime that I touch the ball. I can change the game."

New Orleans, Seattle, New York Jets, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Oakland, New England and Tennessee were on hand.

Vann hopes he will be drafted, but believes he'll get a shot at making a NFL roster, even if he has to go the free-agent route.

  4. I hope he pulls his pants up on his ass and stop acting so ghetto. Character means a lot to the NFL and Vann has a long ways to go, based on what I observed of him at this year's Orange & Green Game. I'm a big fan of his and think he's the best return man in the country, but he's being ill advised or not advised at all. Good luck to you Vann.

  5. Could you have said that to him, while at the OGreen game? Posting it here is of no (good) use. Right now you are more offensive than the idea that his pants and perhaps other rough ends needed to be better placed. Be an active part of the Village or 'hood. Otherwise you too could be said to be acting "ghetto"(can't believe we really misuse that so much just like "thug").
OT:Drafts are a profound slap in the face to the black, dare I say American community. On so many levels, but we must make them more positive and useful than they ever have been. Go Leroy Vann, we support you.

  6. If I had said that to him at the Orange & Green Game, I probably would have had to shoot him. Besides, I shouldn't have to tell a grown man to pull up his pants on his naked ass. It's time for "the village" to start holding these misfits accountable for their bad behavior as oppose to making excuses for them.

  7. 8:31PM - AMEN! You are so right! Why doesn't it start with the parentage at home and then expectation from the Football Coach. However, there are some adults who find it not their business and will side with the child/young adult. God Bless You for your honesty and courage!

    Go Rattlers!

As my college age niece said, "guys who wear their pants like they are dressing in their dad's clothes are just letting you know they are not quite a full grown man yet."

I imagine Mr. Vann has had limited life experience and just doesn't know yet how very very handsome he could be with just a few minor adjustments.
