MC Lyte released her debut album, Lyte As a Rock, in 1988. She was the first rap artist ever to perform at New York’s historic Carnegie Hall and the first female rapper to produce a gold single.
In 1993, she received the Grammy nomination for Best Rap Single for her song "Ruffneck," becoming the first female solo rapper to ever make the shortlist for a Grammy award. She picked up another Grammy nomination in the same category for her 2003 "Ride Wit Me."
MC Lyte continues to make history in the music industry. Last year, she became the first African American woman to be elected to the position of president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Grammys Recording Academy.
