U.S. President Barack Obama made an unannounced appearance in the White House Briefing Room on Friday, July 19 to speak about the ruling in the trial of Trayvon Martin’s killer. Last week, a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman of all charges in the shooting death of Martin, an unarmed teenager.

Obama urged the entire nation “to do some soul-searching” on the issue of race.

He urged Americans to reexamine “Stand Your Ground” laws while considering what they would have thought if Martin had been the one to shoot and kill Zimmerman.

“And for those who resist that idea that we should think about something like these "stand your ground" laws, I'd just ask people to consider, if Trayvon Martin was of age and armed, could he have stood his ground on that sidewalk?” Obama asked.  “And do we actually think that he would have been justified in shooting Mr. Zimmerman who had followed him in a car because he felt threatened?  And if the answer to that question is at least ambiguous, then it seems to me that we might want to examine those kinds of laws.”
