The FAMU Rattlers (1-4 overall, 0-1 conference) dropped their Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener 34-21 to Morgan State University. The Morgan Bears (1-5, 1-1) hadn't won a football game in nearly 12 months.
"It's been a long time," Bears Head Coach Donald Hill-Eley said
about the win that ended an 11 game losing streak. "I just feel excited for
these young men. They've been working hard and it's been a long time and we
needed to have some success to continue to move forward."
With the loss, the Rattlers' hopes for post-season play were all but dashed. If the Rattlers win the remainder of their games, the best they could finish is 8-4.
The Rattlers face tough road challenges against South Carolina State, Norfolk State and Bethune-Cookman. Unless something changes soon, all of the Rattlers' remaining games are challenges.
During yesterday's game, quarterback Damien Fleming had another frustrating day with three interceptions. He now leads the MEAC with interceptions. The FAMU offensive line allowed Fleming to be sacked twice.
The Rattler defense allowed the Morgan Bears 382 yards of total offense on the afternoon, 238 of which came from the ground in rushing yards.

Tight end Michael Ethridge caught a 17-yard pass from Damien Fleming to
score the Rattlers' final TD of the game.
