According to President Larry Robinson, "last year, the average grade point average of our freshmen class was 3.4, this year’s class will have an average 3.68 gpa. The SAT and ACT scores of our students are also increasing."

In 2017-18 FAMU freshmen had  an average SAT score of 1078 against a SUS average score of 1266.  The scores for FAMU's freshman class exceeded the national average for all African American test takers by 152 points.

The average GPA for FAMU's entering freshman class of 2016-17 was 3.5 against a SUS average of 4.0.   The average SAT score of the class was 1018 while the SUS average was 1185 and the national average for all African American test takers was 941.

The recent revelation that BOG has asked FAMU to slow its enrollment growth isn't new, this has been a recurring effort for the last six years.  Last year the BOG questioned the enrollment plans of FAMU, FIU, and UCF.

Last year, President Robinson told the BOG he believes FAMU can effectively handle an enrollment of 12,000 students when asked about the issue.  “We have the (academic and student) services available, but we are reallocating and restructuring some of that to make it possible.”

Overall, the academic profile of the average admitted FAMU freshman exceeds the national average for African Americans and its HBCU counterparts.
