The amphitheater being constructed in the heart of campus on the site of the former McGuinn, Diamond, Wheatly and Cropper Halls will cost an additional $1.72 million more than expected, according to agenda materials submitted to the FAMU Board of Trustees.
On Wednesday, the trustees Budget and Finance Committee will decide whether or not to approve the additional funding. FAMU interim VP Richard Schweigert, and his staff, are recommending approval to transfer $910,000 from the Housing Repair and Renovation fund and another $810,000 from the Parking Services Repair and Renovation fund towards the project.
When the project was announced in December 2018, FAMU Project Manager Craig Talton estimated that the amphitheater would costs $2.7 million, which includes prep work, design, construction and furnishings.
In spring 2018 SGA contributed approximately $1.5 million in capital improvement trust money to the project for the 2018-2019 academic year. The remaining $220,000 in cost were to be covered by a mix of funding sources, the university said at the time.
Notwithstanding the cost overruns on the amphitheater project, the board will also consider accepting a $500,000 gift from a family to name the amphitheater.
