FAMU grad U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, D-Fla., had an easier time in his primary this year than he did in 2016 or 2018.

Lawson was elected to Congress in 2016 after beating scandal-plagued U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., in the primary. Two years later, Lawson beat back the primary challenge of former Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown.

After the smoke cleared on Tuesday night, Lawson easily bested his two primary challengers. With all votes in, Lawson took 55.5 percent.

With this North Florida district considered secure for Democrats, Lawson is a favorite over businessman Gary Adler who won the Republican primary.

FAMU grad State Rep. Shevrin Jones, beat a crowded filed to become the Democratic nominee for Florida Senate District 35.  Jones earned 43% of the vote with his closets competitor his closest competitor in the six person race garnered 15%.

Jones’ victory puts him on track to make history to become the first openly gay man elected to the Florida Senate. He will face a write-in opponent in November.
