The FAMU brand is red hot! More than new 18,000 students have applied for admissions to FAMU for the fall 2023 class, FAMU VP for Student Affairs William Hudson, Jr., told Trustees this week. The surge in applications represents a more than 135% increase over this time last year.
So far, the university has admitted 2,011 prospective students, a 20% increase from last year.
The increase in applications for FAMU is unique when compared to its competition who, in many cases have waived the SAT/ACT tests requirements or reduced its out of state tuition. FAMU, nor the state of Florida, has done neither.
Along with FAMU’s stepped up recruitment efforts, another reason for the sharp increase in applications to FAMU this year could be that this is the first full year that FAMU has been a part of the Common Application program a single online college application form used by over 1000 colleges and universities. Instead of filling out the same general information—like your address, GPA, and extracurriculars— a dozen times, you only have to do it once.
The Common App dashboard also helps you track necessary application documents (like your letters of recommendation) and important deadlines.
Overall HBCU enrollment has fluctuated over the past decade, but has seen a steady increase uptick in recent years. In fall 2019, there were approximately 292,000 students enrolled in HBCUs, which was a 4% increase from the previous year.
Female students comprise the majority
Historically, female students have outnumbered male students at HBCUs. In fall 2019, approximately 63% of HBCU students were female. This past fall, female students made up 67% of the FAMU student body.
Black enrollment down nationwide
Nationwide, overall Black student enrollment in colleges nationwide has declined by 11% since 2015. In Florida, Black student enrollment in colleges has decreased by 12% since 2010 from more than 36,000 students to 32,047 in 2022.
