The FAMU men’s and women’s basketball teams open the 2023-24 campaign this evening. The men travel to Nebraska to take on 8th ranked Creighton and the women traveling to Knoxville, TN, to face the 11th ranked Lady Vols of the University of Tennessee.
The men will be lead, once again, by Head Coach Robert McCullum who returns for his 7th season at FAMU. He has compiled an overall record of 61-110.
Last season, the Rattlers went 7-22 (5-13 SWAC) on the season, and failed to qualify for the conference tournament. This year’s team returns just three of the seven men who started 10 or more games a year ago.
Leading scorer and distributor Jordan Tillmon (10.6 ppg., 2.4 apg.) as well as leading rebounder Jaylen Gates (9.0 ppg., 7.1) are gone, meaning the top returning scorer is Dimingus Stevens, a one-time Seton Hall player who averaged 8.4 points in 12.7 minutes per game off the bench last season.
The Rattlers have been picked to finish 11th in the SWAC in a preseason poll of league coaches and SID's.

The Rattler women will be lead by first-year Head Coach Bridgette Gordon .
Her team will feature a new look roster, mostly inherited from her predecessors former coach Shalon Pillow, announced her resignation just after the transfer portal had closed. Gordon’s team will feature nine out of 15 players on the 2023-24 roster who weren't on the team a year ago.
