With only seven games left in the regular season, the FAMU women's basketball team has found themselves in an unexpected position, riding a three-game winning streak and currently holding fifth place in league play. This surge in performance has been largely attributed to the outstanding contributions of graduate student guard Ahriahna Grizzle, who has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Week for an unprecedented third consecutive week.
The Lady Rattlers currently hold a 6-5 record in the SWAC (7-15 overall), could potentially win more games this year under first-year coach Bridgette Gordon than they did during the past three years under for coach Shalon Pillow.
Grizzle's remarkable play has been nothing short of exceptional, with her averaging an impressive 19.7 points per contest along with 2.5 steals per game. Her consistent dominance on both ends of the court has not only solidified her position as a frontrunner for the SWAC Player of the Year award but has also thrust her into contention for the 2023-24 HBCU Women's Basketball Player of the Year accolade.
The Lady Rattlers' recent success can be largely attributed to two things coach Gordon and Grizzle's leadership and skill on the court.
Grizzle’s ability to score efficiently while also making significant contributions on the defensive end has been instrumental in propelling FAMU to their current standing in league play. Grizzle's impact extends beyond just statistics; her leadership and determination have inspired her teammates to elevate their game, resulting in the team's impressive winning streak.
As the regular season draws to a close, the FAMU women's basketball team finds themselves in a promising position to make an impact in SWAC tournament play.
