Honda, renowned for its commitment to social responsibility, has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) bands. In a landmark move, the automotive giant has made a generous $500,000 grant to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), earmarked exclusively for awarding scholarships to students participating in band programs.
This partnership marks a significant stride in Honda's enduring support for HBCU students, coinciding with the return of the Honda Battle of the Bands in 2025, long considered the nation's premier showcase for HBCU marching bands. With this infusion of funds, Honda seeks to bolster the educational pursuits of talented students while nurturing the rich cultural legacy entrenched within HBCU band programs.
A total of 41 deserving HBCU students will be selected as beneficiaries of this initiative, each awarded a need-based scholarship of up to $10,000 ($5,000 per semester) for the 2024-2025 academic year. Notably, these scholarships are designated to defray the costs associated with average tuition and fees, thereby easing the financial burdens faced by students striving for academic excellence.
Yvette Hunsicker, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility and Inclusion & Diversity at American Honda, underscored the profound impact of HBCU band programs on community culture. "HBCU band programs are a fundamental part of the community's culture," she said. "Honda is proud to provide these deserving students with an opportunity to advance their educational pursuits."
How to apply
To qualify, students must be enrolled full-time as undergraduates at an HBCU during the 2024-2025 academic year, actively engaged in the university band programs. Moreover, candidates must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, demonstrate financial need, and have the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at their respective institutions.
The application process also mandates the submission of a two-minute video wherein candidates respond to a designated application question. This holistic approach ensures that recipients not only exhibit academic prowess but also embody the spirit of artistic expression and community engagement emblematic of HBCU band programs.
Aspiring scholars have until May 17, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time to submit their applications. Those eager to seize this transformative opportunity are encouraged to visit the Thurgood Marshall College Fund website to initiate the application process.
In harnessing the power of education and artistic endeavor, Honda's visionary partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund heralds a new era of empowerment for HBCU students, affirming their rightful place as torchbearers of cultural heritage and academic excellence.
