In a significant move towards fostering sustainable agriculture, U.S. Sugar has announced a partnership with FAMU and Tuskegee University to study the environmental and economic impacts of sugar-cane farming in Florida's Glades region. The aim of this effort is  to explore more sustainable farming techniques and assess their effects on local communities.

“I am proud work with U.S. Sugar in this transformative partnership,” said Garlen D. Weston,  Interim Dean, the FAMU College of Agriculture and Food Safety. “By uniting our expertise and resources, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering innovative, environmentally responsible agriculture in the Glades region and beyond. This collaboration exemplifies our dedication to understanding sustainable agricultural practices and underscores our unwavering commitment to the well-being of our communities. We are honored to be a part of this impactful endeavor.”

The project will launch a comprehensive environmental study to evaluate the impacts of various sustainable farming practices, including the controversial sugar-cane-burning techniques. The research will analyze both the economic and ecological consequences of these practices, aligning with a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

This initiative aims to actively involve community stakeholders to ensure that farming practices are beneficial to nearby residents, highlighting the importance of community engagement in agricultural research.

Florida's sugar-cane farmers have faced scrutiny over the environmental impact of sugar-cane burns, with some previous studies suggesting a link to air pollution. However, local farmers often cite state and private data indicating that Florida maintains good air quality standards. This new study will delve deeper into these concerns, providing a more nuanced understanding of the environmental impacts.
