The FAMU volleyball team continued their winning streak with a decisive 3-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) in a midweek match last evening. The Rattlers improved to 13-5 overall on the season and remain undefeated in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with a perfect 5-0 record.
The match was a showcase of the Rattlers' strength and skill, as they swept B-CU with scores of 25-17, 25-16, and 25-14. This win marks FAMU's ninth sweep of the season and their fourth consecutive victory.
Iyonnie Sanford and Brooke Lynn Watts were standout players for the Rattlers, each recording double-digit kills. Sanford led with 13 kills and Watts followed closely with 12. Watts also secured a double-double, adding 10 digs to her impressive performance. Alexandra Koleva contributed significantly to the team's success with 32 assists, seven digs, and three kills.
The match began with an evenly played first set, featuring eight ties and three lead changes. However, FAMU soon took control with a commanding 12-3 run. Sanford was instrumental in this set, recording six kills on a .556 hitting percentage, while B-CU managed only six kills in total.
The Rattlers' momentum carried into the second set, where they quickly established an 8-2 lead and maintained a substantial advantage, leading by as many as nine points.
The third set saw Sanford and Watts setting the tone with consecutive kills, and FAMU never looked back. They built an 11-4 lead and continued to dominate, never trailing in the set.
With this victory, FAMU looks forward to concluding their current homestand with matches against Southern on October 13 and Alcorn State on October 14. The Rattlers are poised to maintain their strong form and continue their pursuit of a conference title.
The Rattlers will be back in action against conference foe Southern on Saturday at 1 pm.
