Tonight, Marci Stringer, a Tallahassee native and FAMU graduate, will make her television debut in the Lifetime movie "life is Not a Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story."

"Fairytale" is a biopic of the tumultuous childhood and road to stardom of Fantasia Barrino, winner of the 2004 American Idol competition. Stringer will star as Tess, a rough young mother who, along with three other young mothers, embrace Fantasia.

They offer gritty advice that Fantasia uses to catapult herself to stardom. The film, which is directed by Debbie Allen, will star Fantasia Barrino, Loretta Divine and Kadeem Hardison.

Like many thespians before her, Stringer wanted to stretch her acting chops and break into television and feature films. Her big break came when her agent told her about a casting call for the TV movie.

Stringer sent in audition tapes for three different characters and hoped for the best. Her best was good enough to receive an invitation from Allen to audition for the role of Tess. When she arrived in New Orleans for the audition, Stringer said she knew had to shine.

"There were at least 200 girls standing in line vying for this role," Stringer said. Stringer received a call the following week from her agent telling her she had landed the role.

While new to the small screen, Stringer is no novice to acting. The Tallahassee native began honing her talent as a drama student at Rickards High School where she participated in various chool-sponsored plays. She continued acting while attending FAMU, starring in FAMU Essential Theatre productions.

Upon earning a Bachelor's of Arts in theatre performance, she continued developing her sklls as a graduate student at the University of Florida. Stringer currently resides in Orlando where she does commercial work, theatre, film, teaches drama therapy and provides private acting coaching.

  4. I saw her. She was in a cameo role. If you winked, you may have missed her. But I was looking intensely for her, and there she was! She was one of the card-playing girlfriends in a scene with Fantasia. She was sitting around a table being a girlfriend, talking a little smack, and the camera went quickly by. She had one of those quickie lines, a fast-talking trash-talking kinda line, but she was there, and she was good, and she looked very, very good. Yes! I saw her, and she did us all proud!
