BLACK ENTERPRISE (BE) today officially announced its 2006 list of the Top 50 Colleges for African Americans. Of the 10 highest-ranking schools for 2006, five are historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs); five are located in the South; and eight are private institutions.

Attaining the No. 1 rank is Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL. Founded on October 3, 1887, as the State Normal College for Colored Students, the venerable HBCU offers 62 bachelor's degrees in 103 majors/tracks and provides 36 master's degrees in 56 majors/tracks. Florida A&M previously achieved the No. 6 rank in 2004. "FAMU's reputation for educational excellence continues to thrive," said Interim President Castell Vaughn Bryant. "We provide our students with well-rounded experiences and
equip them with the skills they need to be successful and productive citizens. The impact of our students' success penetrates into an improved quality of life for the communities they go on to serve."

  1. Ok enuff of this already. If you all are comfortable with being the "#1 college among Blacks". I just think we ought to set our sights a little higher, like we did back in 1997,

  2. Well, I think we should still all celebrate this victory. FAMU is still the best, IN SPITE OF, all the damage the interim administration has done. Let's all take this as an opportunity to re-dedicate ourselves to the task of saving FAMU!

  3. How can we rededicate ourselves? This article in BE is a windfall for us. Alumni from around the country should be purchasing a copy of the magazine. Secondly, alumni should be participating in college fairs all over the country talking about FAMU's programs and campus life. How can you find out about college fairs? Connect with Black Greek organizations, call your local high schools and contact other civic organizations. Lastly, call the university and request a copy of recruitment materials.

I am sure many of you are saying, "Isn't this the university's job to recruit?" The handful of persons who may do recruiting for the university cannot service the whole nation. Secondly, they cannot attend the 40 different college fairs that occur in your area.

The best recruiters of new students are current students, satisfied parents and alumni. It is time we do more than run our mouths about what is wrong and start talking up what is good.

The mileage we get from this good press is up to us. If we want to increase enrollment, let's just do it. Enough said.
