Trustee candidate has contracts with FAMU

A company founded by Robert Brown, a candidate for one of the three vacant seats on the FAMU Board of Trustees, has two contracts with FAMU. Mr. Brown's company B&C Associates has current contracts with the FAMU Foundation and the FAMU Office of Alumni Affairs. Both contracts were signed early last year.
Rattler Nation has learned that the FAMU Foundation signed a contract with Robert Brown's B&C Associates after FAMU VP for University Relations and Foundation Executive Director Ron "GI" Joe flew to North Carolina twice last year to meet with B&C. With Joe solidly backing B&C, they were paid to help FAMU raise $10 million.
The B&C contract drew the ire of several foundation staffers who question Joe's "fervor" in hiring "these rookies" to raise funds. RN's tippers with knowledge of the B&C/FAMU Foundation contract described the contract only as "lucrative" and said that B&C has already been paid in full and not a dime has been raised.
RN isn't sure of the nature of B&C's contract with the FAMU Office of Alumni Affairs.
To his credit, Mr. Brown was very upfront about both contracts mentioning them on his application to serve on the Board.
The Florida Board of Governors will meet tomorrow in Orlando to interview the five folks vying for the three vacant trustee positions.

Finally candidates backgrounds made public
I like Col. Joe in his former capacity interfacing with the students. I question his experience in raising funds. Our current situation is such that we need experts. This is FAMU not TrainU
ReplyDeleteFolks this guy is another consultant that milked the university with the help of Joe and Manning.
ReplyDeleteThe foundation over spent their operation budget by at least $6M with the assistance of Brown (lucrative contracts) and Jones (audit chair).
Does this mean that he can not be a "good" board member? Call me naiive, but we can not have people on the Board that we do business with? Won't you find similar situations on other Boards?
ReplyDeleteRobert Brown isn't even a college grad. So you do the math. He seems to be more like a fast talking huckster in the J.R.E. Lee III mold.
ReplyDeleteThere are outstanding people who are notcollege graduates. Bill Gates of Microsoft is one of them. Let's not be condescending to assume only college graduates have somethign to offer. If you review his full application you see he is well connected--Wayne Huzienga of Blockbuster fame.
ReplyDeleteNot to defend him, but let the process roll.
Robert Brown isn't Bill Gates!
ReplyDeleteThese men are no "Bill Gates"!
ReplyDeleteKarl E. White is the most qualified! FAMU Needs a wall street background & someone with board experience at a successful university i.e. his UMASS Experience! We need the RattlerNation community to mass email the BOG and push his nomination! Buddy Fletcher founder of Fletcher Asset Management where Karl is the Chief Investment Officer gave 50 Million to Howard! We can begin to get Wall Street donors at FAMU!!!!! He is also alumni! Rattlers very critical nominee in Karl E. White!!! He needs our support right now!
ReplyDeleteEndowments pay a 5% return to the investor. 50Million @ 5% is 2.5 Million a year for generations and its tax-deductible- has nothing to do with the school more with the Asset Management company i.e. Smith Barney, Merrill Lynch. We have the opportunity to bring an African American Investment Bank to provice diversity. To have a well-known african american wall street investment bank providing oversight to the foundation & school's budget it can bring credibility back to FAMU. There is no one on the BOT with a Wall Street background that understands finance. FAMU is still the crown jewel of HBCUs-Black Enterprise #1 college for African Americans. Whoever gets the credit for turning FAMU around will position themselves as a national leader with global influence. Just want investment bankers need! The problem with the Board of Trustees is that there was no real incentive for the school to work. Their careers for the most part did not hinge on the school being successful. Karl E. White is the 1st candidate where a successful tenure as a FAMU BOT leading a turnaround of the school's finances will add another dimension to his career. There has to be a motivating factor other than just loving FAMU to get talented & connected alumni to want to invest their careers into the institution.
8:20-I don't think anything is per se, wrong with Brown being on the BOT while he has contracts with the university. But, it has the appearance of impropriety and he would have to abstain from voting on issues that deal with his contracts. So, for those reasons, I would not want him on the Board. I think there are are other more sufficient choices (i.e White, Dent, Shannon)that can be made.

While you are exposing the "alleged" wrongs by the university, I see that you still haven;t discussed the leave given to the Registrar at the COL. She was as suspect as many of the people that you call yourself exposing at the university. You mentioned it as a by the way item last week. Give us the investigative story like you do on all of the other matters concerning the university.
ReplyDelete8:44, Correct me if I'm wrong, but does having a college degree mean that suddenly you are qualified to serve on a board??? Apparently the man has made his mark in the professional arena w/o having a "degree." There is such a thing as professional experience and a kind of moving-up-the-ladder advancement. There are plenty of fools out there with multiple degrees who still don't have a friggin' clue. Might you be one of those people?
ReplyDelete9:27. YOu're asking people to mass mail the BOG, yet I'm questioning your info on Mr. Fletcher. I know he gave money to HARVARD, but when did he give ANY money to Howard?
ReplyDeleteI'm all for having an investor on our board!
ReplyDeletesome folks, i see, are just trying to create some blog mess here.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 11:43, but this IS a University. Somethings that don't matter, actually matters sometimes.
ReplyDeleteHe has an impressive background but it's not worth the possible drama. The other candidates are well qualified so it's not like we don't have comparable options. They are qualified, they have degrees, and it's evident that they have a "friggin' clue". With all due respect, stay focus and compare apples to apples.
You need to go somewhere with that "your degree is just a peace of paper" debate. When it comes to being on the board of a University, having earned a college degree, several in fact, should have some merit. Damn. You sound like my cousin ray-ray.
PS.
He's not Bill Gates.
THE BIG P.S.
ReplyDeleteHe NEVER raised $10 Million. He got paid well......FAMU did not. While his company's pockets are getting fat, where is the return of service. They get paid....we raise NO, I repeat NO money!!!!!
But then again, with him on the board, maybe incompetents like Altha Manning will now make over $200,000 (something she can't even raise as Director of Alumni Affairs) and stay employed. I bet she's pulling very hard for him and I bet she'll get promoted if he is confirmed. MARK THIS POST, you heard it hear first!!!!!!
If ths affects accreditation in any form, he has to keep on moving. this shows that tos idiots of the BOG need to desperately be changed. PRONTO!
ReplyDeleteHey RN,
ReplyDeleteIt's about time you tightened up Tricky Boy Brown. Looks like 'ole Tricky "Dick" Nixon schooled homeboy in the game of lies and deceit.
He lied his arse off during his BOG interview and those white boys and Carolyn Roberts were carrying his water and sold him to the rest of the nominating board.
Looks like Carolyn Roberts on the BOG did not do her homework.
Hey Carolyn, stop listening to Castell!
Hey RN, we're waiting! Bring on the juice. Bring that butt whipping on, cause if these fools (BOG) caused us to be cited yet again by SACS, they all need to be dragged through the streets butt naked and caned on the Set at high noon.
And I quote from Mr. Brown's interview when questioned about his lack of a college degree, "I was a special assistant to President Nixon. I helped run the USA, if I can do that without a college degree, I think I am qualified to serve on this board." There you have it folks and we all know what happened to Tricky Dick -- Watergate.
ReplyDeleteMr. Brown was a good student of Tricky Dick, because he didn't learn to tell the TRUTH!
