Two Winter Haven High School students have launched a petition campaign for a cause that’s dear to them. It has nothing to do with cafeteria food, a dress code, or budget cuts. They want their school dean, Ken Riley, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
So far, classmates Nick Harper and Jordan Powell have more than 1,000 signatures.
Riley was a cornerback for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1969 to 1983. According to the Lakeland Ledger, he “finished his career with 65 interceptions, led the AFC in interceptions three times and was on the NFL All-Pro First or Second Team three times. Yet, Riley, who never was a flamboyant player or sought personal attention, never made a Pro Bowl.”
Riley is a FAMU alumnus and played football for legendary Coach Jake Gaither. He later served as an assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers, head football coach, and then athletic director, at FAMU.
When Riley's former boss, President Frederick S. Humphries, retired in 2001 the athletic department had a $3 million surplus. The university administration that succeeded Humphries replaced Riley with an interim AD who quickly turned the surplus into a $3 million deficit. That interim AD's associate director for finance later pled guilty to stealing money from the department.
It is ashame that high school students are doing what FAMU students should have been doing for the past 10-15 years! It is sad that instead of the Univeristy students being apart of ensuring that all FAMUANS get their proper place in the history of all aspects of America that many of us are simply worried about, well ourselves.
ReplyDelete9:04 AM, I totally agree with you. Many of our FAMU students seem to be out of touch or just don't give a damn about anything. They don't show up for Convocation, but will break their necks getting to some "Be Out Day".
ReplyDeleteKen Riley SHOULD be in the NFL Hall of Fame. He was a great player and is one of the most humble and nicest person you will ever meet.
I disagree, perhaps, rather than blame FAMU students for apathy, maybe you should direct some of that shame to FAMU Alumni including yourselves!!!
ReplyDeleteIn the end, it doesn't matter who is doing the pushing as long as we all get on board and get the job done right? Now what are you going to do???
Amen. 1:43. I bet the first two posters are doing diddly to initiate Riley's recognition and includion in the HF. They, as usual, are waiting for someone else to do their bidding and are quick to call out folks for not doing what they certainly can get started doing. Typical behavior.
ReplyDeleteNow, my question to the frst two posters: What are you two folks doing besides complaining about who oughts to be doing what.
Don't concern yourselves with what the first two posters are or aren't doing. Support FAMU & Ken Riley.
ReplyDeleteKen Riley for the NFL Hall of Fame.
ReplyDeleteLets make it happen!!
OK, what's OUR plan?
ReplyDeleteGreat, what is the plan?
ReplyDeleteThere isn't a "plan," only talk of planning a plan or planning to talk of a plan. Or typing on RN about planning. That's pretty much how it's going to be. As usual.
ReplyDeleteWhat can be done? I would like to help.
ReplyDelete10:43, don't offer to "help." Offer, instead, to get things started and to move things along on your end.
ReplyDelete3:34, Everyone who is willing to help won't be able to "start up" or spearhead a movement. Let alone defend their position to the mindsets of folks like you. Which is why they usually are willing to HELP. Now you are free to speak your mind, but you were the negative voice and the drum major for apahthy on this one. Unfortunately there are a lot of Americans just like that, cheerleaders for success albeit failure. Furthermore,WE have so many similar unrecognized FAMily all over the world, so if we do anything it should be on the behalf of all of the great efforts and accomplishments of OUR FAMily Members. Now I will go out of my way to HELP out with something of that magnitude, that way Ken Riley and Others will have their day of recognition and appreciation for their works as they relate to the University Mission and her community at large. "We're All FAMUans!"- Mrs. Ann Foster (Hubba, Mrs. Foster)
ReplyDeleteYa'll stop sitting around allowing the HATERS to populate this site without saying something to keep us moving forward. I would threaten to create an identity here so to challenge these cowardly anonymous hateful posters. But they don't deserve to know who knows their true position in this until we drive them out in the open. Beware and vigilant. When in doubt, check the motto and Alma Mater.
ReplyDeleteBest AD FAMU has had in recent history, hands down!
