The rich legacy and impact of the former FAMU Hospital will be permanently etched in Florida’s history.

Today, a historical marker, issued by the Florida Department of State, will be installed on FAMU’s campus on the corner of Palmer Avenue and Adams Street. The marker commemorates the contributions of FAMU’s former hospital, its staff and related programs. It was originally unveiled during FAMU’s 2014 Black History Convocation.

The installation ceremony will feature remarks and presentations by FAMU administrators, faculty, staff, alumni and students, as well as members of Tallahassee’s medical and research communities. Michael Zimny, historic sites specialist with the Department of State, will also participate in the ceremony.

The FAMU hospital served as the only medical facility for blacks within 150 miles of Tallahassee from 1950-1971 and ushered in FAMU’s world-class nursing and pharmacy programs.
