On Monday, FAMU President Elmira Mangum and the FAMU Department of Athletics hosted a celebration rally for the women’s track and field team on the steps of Lee Hall. The team, coached by Darlene Moore, won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. The conference also named Moore its “Outstanding Coach” for 2015.

Moore has now won four MEAC championships since coming to FAMU, with three consecutive women’s cross country titles to her credit. For her career, this was her 16th championship overall.

‘When I took over the team I knew it was going to be a work in progress, because of the respect and with such a rich track tradition at this school,” Moore said.

The current women’s track and field team is also getting the job done in the classroom. The team has a combined average GPA of 3.12, one of the best in the FAMU roster of teams.

“What these ladies represent is what we are all about at FAMU.  They strike not only in their competition, but in their academics as well,” Mangum said.
