“Girls Trip,” a film by Will Packer Productions, debuted with a national release on July 21st. It stars Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah as a group of friends who reunite years after they originally met as students at FAMU.

According to the Associated Press, “Girls Trip” took the #2 spot in the box office during its opening weekend with $30.4M, with the World War II drama “Dunkirk” taking #1 ($50.5M).

“[“Girls Trip”] drew in an audience that was 79 percent female and 50 percent under the age of 30. Fifty-nine percent of attendees were estimated to be African-American,” the AP reported. “Notably, audiences gave the film a stellar A CinemaScore, suggesting the film will have long-term playability.”

“Girls Trip” was also scored “Fresh” at Rotten Tomatoes, a site that compiles film reviews. The movie had an 89 percent approval rating. The “critical consensus” summary on the site said: “Girls Trip is the rare R-rated comedy that pushes boundaries to truly comedic effect -- and anchors its laughs in compelling characters brought to life by a brilliantly assembled cast.”
