In a decisive move last night, the Tallahassee City Commission voted, 5-0, to rename Wannish Way, stretching from the FAMU Way roundabout to Bragg Drive, to Althea Gibson Way. The renaming will impact about 66 addresses.

The proposal to rename the road in honor of tennis legend Althea Gibson was a local favorite, which had the full support of the FAMU Board of Trustees and honors her groundbreaking achievements in sports and her significance as a role model for women and athletes of color. Gibson, who rose to prominence in the 1950s, shattered racial barriers in tennis and became the first Black player to win Wimbledon and the U.S. National Championships.

However, the renaming process encountered a roadblock less than a week ago when Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor,a FAMU professor who represents the southside of Leon County, vehemently opposed a similar attempt by the County Commission. Proctor's opposition sparked a heated discussion among community members, highlighting divergent opinions on the renaming issue.

The renaming began as a City Commission item brought up at their Oct. 25 meeting, but the city directed their staff to bring the issue to the County, which has authority to name and rename streets.

Despite the County's botched efforts, the Tallahassee City Commission pressed forward with the renaming initiative, emphasizing the importance of honoring Gibson's legacy and contributions to Tallahassee. The decision also reflects the city's commitment to recognizing individuals of diverse backgrounds who have made a significant impact in our community, particularly those who have paved the way for equality and representation.

The renaming of Wannish Way to Althea Gibson Way not only pays homage to a trailblazing athlete but also serves as a symbolic gesture of inclusivity and progress within the Tallahassee community. Supporters hope that the newly named thoroughfare will serve as a constant reminder of Gibson's extraordinary achievements and inspire future generations to pursue their dreams despite facing adversity.
