n a historic victory, Zayla Bryant and Kennedy Williams have been elected as the new Student Government President and Vice President at Florida Agricultural and Mechanic University (FAMU). The duo secured 56 percent of the vote, tallying 2005 votes in Tuesday's elections, marking a significant win over the incumbent Loryn May, and running mate Nissa Phillip, who received 1596 votes, accounting for 44 percent.
Bryant and Williams, who campaigned on a platform of inclusivity, innovation, and student empowerment, have made history as the first all-female duo to hold the top leadership positions in the Student Government Association (SGA) at FAMU.
"We are incredibly honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve our fellow students," said Bryant in a post-election statement. "Our goal is to ensure that every student's voice is heard and that we create a campus environment where everyone feels welcome and supported."
Their opponents, May and Phillip, expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to serve and congratulated Bryant and Williams on their win. "We want to thank Loryn and Nissa for their dedication and hard work," said Williams. "We look forward to building on their achievements and addressing the challenges that lie ahead."
In addition to the SGA elections, FAMU also saw the crowning of new royalty as Edwina Fleuridor and Miles Howard were victorious in Thursday's runoff elections for Miss FAMU and Mister FAMU, respectively. Fleuridor edged out Tatiana Bell with 51 percent of the vote to Bell's 49 percent. While Howard cruised to victory with ease garnering 63 percent of the vote (2029 votes) from the student body, leaving his challenger with a mere 1205 votes (37 percent).
"We are thrilled to welcome Edwina and Miles as our new Miss FAMU and Mister FAMU," said Bryant. "Their leadership and commitment to our university will undoubtedly inspire and uplift our community."
The new administration and royalty will take office in the coming weeks, and the campus is eager to see the changes and initiatives that Bryant, Williams, Fleuridor, and Howard will implement.
"We are committed to working tirelessly for the betterment of our university and our fellow students," added Bryant. "Together, we can make FAMU an even stronger and more vibrant community."
