Not sure if you've been following the case of Shani Davis, the number two-ranked Olympian speed skater, but on the way back to FAMU we discovered this and think its worth noting. On Saturday, Shani announced that he would not compete in Team USA's pursuit of a speedskating gold medal. Without his help, few expect the American team to take the gold in that or several other events.

Shani hopes to become the first African American to win an individual Winter Olympics gold medal and just the second to win one at all. In his defense, Davis says that he wants to focus on his strongest event—the 1,000 meter, which he has a good to chance to win. "I worked to be here. None of my teammates worked to get me here. My dream was to be a short-track and long-track skater, not to skate in the pursuit. People can say what they want."

Because of his decision to abandon team pursuits he's being painted as the selfish villain. But if Shani captures gold in the 1500 or 1000 meter events, he's boldly going where no brother has gone before. There's no "I" in team but there's an "I" in Torino. You might not get the Wheaties box ... but you'll get your medal. Now, we'll gladly return you to more FAMU news... In basketball FAMU men lost to SC State at home 72-65. The Rattlers drop to 11-13 ( 7-5 MEAC) on the season, while SC State improve to 8-13 (6-5 MEAC). The Lady Rattlers beat the Lady Bulldogs 66-51 to improve to 9-12 (5-7 MEAC).
