Three years ago FAMU graduate Leonard E. Burnet,Jr. launched UPTOWN Magazine in his Harlem, NY, neighborhood to give Black professionals in that city a share of the growing "luxury magazine" market dominated by titles such as Ocean Drive, Gotham, and Las Vegas.

In fact, UPTOWN is the nation's first "luxury magazine" geared toward African Americans. UPTOWN claims a circulation of more than 100,000 subscribers with an average household income upwards of $125,000. Most of the magazine's readers are in the 25-44 year-old range.

This past fall UPTOWN expanded its reach from NYC to Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington, DC. This was a major feat, since Burnett was also named publisher of VIBE Magazine around the same time UPTOWN announced its expansion plans.

This is Burnett's second tour of duty at VIBE, he was part of the founding staff at that magazine with fellow SBI grad Keith Clinkscales.
