Gallaudet President Removed After Protests
Here's a story we almost missed that has obvious implications to what is going at FAMU. The board of trustees of the nation's premier school for the deaf voted Sunday to terminate the appointment of the incoming president, who had been the subject of protests, the board announced.
The vote at Gallaudet University came after a daylong closed-door meeting that followed a month of protests by students and faculty members. Jane Fernandes, the school's former provost, had been selected in May to take office in January.
Which was a reaction to the response from the students. If students at FAMU were as vocal about their education as students at Gallaudet, then maybe the situation for certain leadership positions would be different.
ReplyDeleteHaving lived in DC I can say that the student body at Galludet has an ardent hx of activism. Kudos to them for the activism to accomplish their goals. Maybe our FAMU students and alumni can get mobilized as well.
ReplyDeleteAre there FAMUans who are willing to protest, be arrested and go to jail if the BOT hires Adam Herbert, Debra Austin, or Castell Bryant as permanent president? How much are we willing to sacrifice to protest against a bad presidential selection?
ReplyDeleteCAN'T YALL UNDERSTAND...NO ONE CARES ABOUT FAMU!!!! If they did Castell and the BOT would have been out. You don't say you care about something and watch someone wreck it. Where are the protests? The shut-ins! Like my Grandma used to say..."DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT SOMETHING YOU ARE WILLING TO TOLERATE!!!"
ReplyDeletelol...I think the REAL 'problem' is that while many people may dislike some of the tactics of Castell, we do not think it is worth "over-throwing" her! Instead of directing our anger towards Castell, we should all put pressure on our BOT and noteworthy candidates so that we will have a STRONG leader step into FAMU as president. Unfortunately, I believe what is happening to Castell will happen to our next president, no matter how good (or bad) they are! SO, let's make sure we have a strong candidate that has the BEST interest of alumni, faculty, students, and the University at heart, and FAMU will excell into the bright future I know it has!
