Nursing seeks to offer new Masters program

The Florida A&M University School of Nursing is planning to offer a new masters degree program to begin the fall semester of 2007. The Clinical Nurse Leader program the school is attempting to offer is an alternative program which would allow students who couldn't get in the limited access bachelors program to gain a masters in nursing.

The new program has been approved by the school's board of faculty, but still must gain the full approval of the FAMU BOT. Approval by the state Board of Governors isn't needed, because FAMU already offers a masters in nursing.

CNL program hopes to address critical state and national shortages in the nursing profession.

  1. Is this a transition program that allows people with BS degree in other majors to become nurses? Is this the same program that a month ago Rattler Nation was castigating the Nursing Dean about and questioning her abilities?

If so, it is a good idea this degree. Many nursing programs have something similar. it's great that FAMU is catching on.

No bytch! Last month RN discussed the fact that Nursing faculty was disappointed in the new dean's leadership style. Get your facts straight dear.

  5. Not so sure MANY schools of nursing have such a degree. It is a new concept that several major schools are looking at however many are choosing not to consider. Has a needs assessment been completed? Is this a quick fix for the master's program that has had such a low enrollment and graduation rate. Have the local hospitals agreed to support the program and hire the graduates? Will they pay a salary that will be comparable to nurse practitioners? Will they take the same test the college graduates take to become RN's?

RN do you have any answers to these questions?

  6. This program allows people with BS degrees to get a RN in nursing. Therefore most of their classes will be nursing classes. Of course, they take the same licensure as all RN nurses.

This is no different than how people who do not have an undergraduate degree in education are able to go back and take special courses in education so they can be certified. The Dean of Education is also talking about putting a similar Masters Program in place for education for persons who do not have the undergraduate education degree.

It is a good way to meet the shortages in these areas without people starting all over again. Many people would normally just go to a Nursing program at a community college and get the RN. Now they can feel they are moving forward in their credentials by getting a masters, and not just the RN designation or another bachelor's degree. The Nursing field is moving away from the RN degree as the entry level degree and making the BSRN the entry level degree.
