Ruth Witherspoon, an associate dean for Administration and Student Services at the FAMU College of Law is now the new interim dean of the college. Witherspoon took over January 1, 2007. Witherspoon takes over from former interim dean James Douglas who left the college to return to Texas Southern.
Witherspoon is the third leader of the College since its return in 2002.

I am a prospective student and in reading the previous articles about FAMU law school, I am very apprehensive about possibly attending. Does anyone have any positive information about the school? Please help!
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of positives about the school, however, you aren't going to hear them here.
ReplyDeleteI want you to know that the Law school is now going to be in GREAT hands! The new president of FAMU was instrumental in the return of our Law School as the former Provost of FAMU and while at the helm of NCCU its Law School had a Bar Passage rate of of over 86% under his leadership at that University as the President. Bottom line Dr. Ammons knows how to put the right team together to lead FAMU's Law School to National Promince much like our other flagship colleges at the University! In addition I look forward to welcoming you to the FAMU family!
ReplyDeleteThe quality of the teaching and education at the law school is top-notch. The administration, on the other hand, has had it challenges.
ReplyDeleteDean Ruth Witherspoon is a great lady, and is organized and effiecient. However, because of some of the faculty who sit around and hate on evryone instead of getting up and publishing something (anything!) and doing their jobs, Ruth will have a tough time getting the job done due to their infighting. The Admin will also be a hurdle for her to get over. HOpefully she will be able to triumph!
ReplyDeleteDEBRA AUSTIN
ReplyDeletefrom what i hear about witherspoon, she's anything but studen toriented. Hopefully Dr. Ammons will have placed the Dean come Fall 2007.
ReplyDeleteRuth Witherspoon is student oriented! As for Dr. Ammons--he created the mess at the COL with the hiring of former dean Percy Luney. Let's not forget that he EXCLUSIVELY handpicked former dean Luney even though the majority of the search committee did not want him. As for NCCU COL Ammons gets no credit. For decades NCCU has always earned a bar passage rate of 70% or more and has been among the toughest schools as far as admissions were concerned.
ReplyDeleteThe quality of the teaching and education at the law school is top-notch.
ReplyDeleteAre you in a parallel universe? Does this include THE senior faculty member who keeps up the in fighting among the faculty, never stepped a foot in court as a practicing attorney, cited JET magazine in a legal presentation, and fills valuable class time with nonsense?
Any institution where personal agendas are given priority over accountability, professionalism and ethics is in trouble. The trouble does not go away with "new" leadership unless there are fundamental changes. Shuffling a deck of cards only changes the game, not the players.
ReplyDeleteWhen is FAMU col up for review again with the ABA?
ReplyDeleteThis school is currently under active review for compliance, as are most other provisionally operating schools, especially since there has been no permanent dean since 2005 and the main university has had no permanent president. I believe you are trying to find out the date of the next site visit by the ABA.

ReplyDeleteCould we just get on with it and let the current dean and her administration do their jobs? If you are part of the faculty, why don't you just get ta publishing and doing the things you need to do to help the accreditation process along. You guys need to give it a break. It's hard to believe that you are part of the legal profession. What kind of role model are you for the students here at the COL? So stop all of the infighting and bickering. There's a lot of work you should be doing just to develop as a person in the legal profession. Get ta workin'!
DEAN WITHERSPOON IS THE GREATEST!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy she's at the helm. I have nothing but confidence in her ability.
The ABA will not be looking for which dean makes us "happy." Accreditation is not about personalities.

ReplyDeleteYou must be outta your mind...
Witherspoon lacks the fundamental elements it takes to be even a good leader, nevermind a GREAT leader, which is exactly what both the university and the CoL need!
I don't know much about Ammons, but Witherspoon......uggggggghhhhh.
Even if the woman wasn't impersonal and unable to crack a smile, she still lacks the ability to make good and solid decisions based upon the best interests of the students, which would naturally result in the best interests of the school.
Really, it just goes from bad to worse... it would be comical if it wasn't so damaging to all involved.
