ESPN officials are expected announce today that FAMU's football season opener against Southern Universty will be played on Saturday, September 1, at 2:00 p.m., according to an email sent out by the FAMU ticket office.

The game billed as the "MEAC/SWAC Challenge" had been flirting with a Sunday, September 2nd kickoff but that move was blocked by Miles College who is scheduled to play Tuskegee at Birmingham's Legion Field on that day. Miles had opposed an ESPN proposal that would have made the game a doubleheader.

Game date up in the air

  4. RN,

IT IS DAY 4 of the Ammons reign. I am anxiously awaiting some good news

  5. Ammons doesn't start until next month. Robinson is running the show right now.

  6. Townsend has already destroyed the athletic department. And it will get worse. It does not seem that Dr. Ammons is concerned with the state of FAMU athletics, or making a change for that matter. This could be his downfall, if he keeps a backstabber like Townsend around. It's strange that most of the BOT that voted for Thelma Thompson are already gone and Nelson was her biggest supporter (being from UMES and all) and there is no indication he is going anywhere.
Hopefuly Townsend will be gone soon.

  7. Will all top level adminstrators have to resign?

  8. #1 Nelson Townsend is a graduate of UMES and worked there. Why shouldn't he support his president and university?
#2 Nelson Townsend has a long standing relationship with FAMU. This is his second time serving as athletic director.
#3 As a person who has been involved with FAMU athletics, any one will tell you he has been the best athletic director we have had in the last 20 years. Is he making some unpopular decisions? yes! Is he making some great decisions and strides for our program, no doubt. Just because a person supported one person does not mean they cannot have a relationship with someone else and work just as hard. That is the sign of a true professional which Mr. Townsend is. A true leader and manager will do what is right and not just what is popular. If we listened to some of the folks on this web, FAMU would be closed. The majority of you have had minimal life experiences and do not know competent when you see it.

As a person who financially supports athletics (booster, basketball and football season holder and donor to athletics), I am glad he is back and hopes he stays for a while.

You all do more yapping about things which you know nothing about than a million folks.

  9. 12:50, yeah.....okay.....but would you list specifics of what he has done that merits such high praise. Saying the best in 20 years doesn't really mean much. I would like to see objective measures which support your claims.

  10. Nelson is still bitter towards FAMU from the first time he was the AD here. "Unpopular decisions"? Sounds just like Cast-hell. Poor excuse for job not done. If a "true proffessional" these days means a liar: then yes. Staff moral has never been that low. Our Student-athletes have never been treated worse. Ask the coaches and staff(not the ones he brought in), ask the student- athletes "As a that financially support" athletics your "support" must not be enough to help the $3,000,000.00 debt this year in athletics. "Inadvertantly descarded" $1.8 mil in ticket receipts? There is no vision, no plan for the future, no energy or new ideas and ruling by intimidation, terror and dictatorship at FAMU athletics. Sounds Familiar? Great Strides? Huge financial deficit, men's track 8th in MEAC, women's track 7 MEAC, softball LAST, baseball LAST in tourney, etc., etc. Women 6th in MEAC all sports race? The Great Rattler has beeen reduced to a mediocre at best. Over $500,000 in salaries for him and HIS new staff (people that he brought in) to do what exactly? The complaits against Coretta are poring in, compliance director is clueless, academic advisement is incompetent, gender equity? hmmm...If the NCAA comes looking again (and they will) there will be no Rattlers. So, what has Townsend done exactly?

  11. Is he making ANY decisions? That is the question.

  12. How did we go from talking about the date this game will be played to discussing Nelson Townsend?

#1 Townsend didn't create the Athletic Department debt, Bobby Lee and Corbin did that.

Nelson may be a little over the Hill and if he has to leave "in a hurry" I ain't gonna lose no sleep.

  13. Yeah, and Castell did not create all the University problems, Dr. Humphries ans Dr. Gainous did. What a ....of.....!!!

  14. Townsend, do all a favor and leave. You are not wanted at FAMU.
