Janise Joseph Woodard, a FAMU College of Law student, and her six month old son, died yesterday afternoon when a small plane crashed and exploded in her Sanford, FL neighborhood. The plane crashed into her neighbors home, but the ensuing fire quickly spread to her home claiming her life. Woodard was 24-year-old.

Police say the Cessna 310 was attempting to make an emergency landing when it crashed.

Woodard was a student in the College of Law's Part-Time Evening Program. When her class met at 6:30 Tuesday evening, administrators were there to break the news to her classmates.

Interim Law School Dean Ruth A. Witherspoon cancelled formal classes, and instead invited students to use the time to reflect on what Woodard meant to all of them.

The crash claimed the lives of at least five people, three others were critically injured.

  2. This is the 4th FAMU woman I know of in 1 years time that has been killed. The others were the pharmacist in Jacksonville, the journalist over Thanksgiving and the SBI professor.
Let's stay prayerful and strong, Rattlers.

  3. I left out the young lady who was killed in a car crash. She'd just graduated.
I know things are going to happen but is this unusual or am I just taking notice?

  4. What makes this story even sader is that Janice was pregnant. Please pray for her husband, Joseph, and their family. Joseph lost Janice, their adorable 6-month old, and an unborn baby. Janice was a strong woman of God and believed in the power of prayer. So in her memory pray for all that have been hurt by this horrific tragedy- her family, friends and classmates @ the FAMU COL.

  6. Janice's 6-month old was named Josiah. Janice was determined to succeed in law school. She was the one who prayed with- and- for us all before final exams. Her prayers always made everything just seem a little bit easier. They found her huddled in the closet with Josiah in her arms. I know that she prayed. This is shocking! Just unreal!

  7. As a fellow student of Janice at the FAMU COL, it is ironic how Janice would always tell us, "Go to your prayer closet and pray about it." And, ironically that is where she and her baby were found -in her closet. Her last moments on this earth were literally in her prayer closet. I don't want to even think about her final moments. She was a prayer warrior & a mighty woman of God.

  15. I am a student at the law school...and this young lady was my friend. She was good peps to all who knew her and to those who didn't. She was well-respected and always encouraged people to do it God's way. She sponsored a girls-only conference in Orl, Florida that encouraged young high school girls to have a positive self-esteem and to feel good about themselves despite where they come from and what they have done. In doing so, at her conference, she rented a hotel suite at one of the nicest hotels in the city and sponsored all of the girls to have facials, their nails, toes, and several other pampering things done. In most cases, she did this ALL OUT OF HER OWN POCKETS (and Janice was not rich) and many of these young ladies that enjoyed this pampering had never been pampered by their own families or b/c of the life they had come from, they didn't even know about these things. I asked her, "what inspired you to do this?" and she would always respond acknowling "God!" and "that it was all about giving back." Janice was all about bringing other people less fortunate up.
Wow!...She truly had a heart of Gold and will be forever missed. I know that she was a true blessing to me and to any and all others that ever met her.

In 2 Chron. 20:15, the bible reminds us to 'Not be afaird or discouraged b/c...the battle is not yours, but it's the Lords" and b/c of this I know that despite what I fill, we fill, and Famu fills as a family, God is still in control. And as sad as this tradegy may be, that we must use this adversity to remind us all to "Push forward and continue to fight the good fight...even in the storm!"

    Be blessed,

    JP
