Last season, Salpointe Catholic’s Moses Roberts had one of the best seasons you’ll ever see for an Arizona high school linebacker.
He racked up 154 tackles, the highest total in the state among big-school players. He was the 5A Southern Region I Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He was named a first-team All-Southern Arizona performer by two local newspapers. He was an all-state selection according to three Internet media outlets.
But Roberts kept getting overlooked by many colleges across the country. The number that seemed to matter most to coaches was 5-10 — his height.
Roberts does not have the prototypical size or speed for a college linebacker, but he finally was rewarded for his on-field production when he was recently given a partial scholarship to play at Florida A&M.
Roberts has been applied to FAMU and recently received his acceptance letter. He said he’ll sign his football letter of intent in the coming weeks.
Roberts’ 154 tackles in 2007 rank second in Salpointe history for a single season.
"This kid plays like a locomotive with a vendetta," said one Arizona newspaper. "Roberts (5-10, 175) gets in on every play from the middle linebacker spot. He’s quicker than anyone trying to block him and is crafty enough to shoot the gaps and get into the backfield before the tailback or quarterback knows what hit them."
This young man sounds like a true winner, great pick up coach.
ReplyDeleteI think that once Coach Taylor makes FAMU a national contender every year, we will put a fence around schools such as FAMU DRS, Rickards and Godby with our connections to these schools; at least I would hope so. I don't see why, with a national reputation on the FCS level, we wouldn't be able to get the best ball players out of the big bend. It is strange that FSU isn't even doing this anymore; we should surely try to re-build connections to the football programs in our area before trying to build connections with football programs in south Florida. I think that was one of the downside to Coach Carter, he was so focused on South Florida, that he didn't give much attention to the ball players in the big bend. Hopefully Coach Taylor will give these guys in South Georgia and North Florida a better look. There is a lot of untapped talent on the "84" between Banbridge, Ga through Valdosta, Ga, with Cairo High School making it to the State Finals last year. The same can be said for "I-10," from Pensacola to Jacksonville, every year this area has strong contenders in the State Finals. We all know Central and South Florida is a hot spot, be schools such as LSU, USC and Ohio State have began to recognize the talent in our back yards, its time for us to do the same.
ReplyDeleteWe all have a stake in how well FAMU does, we owe it our young people, they should not have take their talent to someone who treats them as slaves, play with their minds
ReplyDeleteAnd reap the rewards from their labor. I say come clean with our young people and quit being politically correct. FAMU and other HBCU’S were there when the doors of these other intuitions were shut in their parents and grandparents face
