Swim team could be without star swimmer

A dispute over unpaid classes could sideline FAMU's star swimmer Mujahid El-Amin, the 2007-2008 Costal Collegiate Swimming Association and FAMU student-athlete of the year.

El-Amin, who is on scholarship, and is a senior criminal justice student, maintains that FAMU failed to pay for a semester of his classes and is trying to resolve the issue between FAMU and the financial aid office. The problem stems from a promise made by former FAMU AD Nelson Townsend for which the current AD has no record.

"I was recruited to FAMU in 2004, and it's been a roller coaster ride ever since," El-Amin said. "I was named most outstanding swimmer in Northeastern Conference, most outstanding swimmer in Coastal Collegiate, the first African-American from an HBCU to qualify for the NCAA, student athlete of the year.

"I was here when they cut the program and brought it back. It's heartbreaking that the university won't help me after all this."

  1. Could we please find out how much that this student owes? I am asking that the Rattler Nation who had all the scoops during the Gainous/Bryant years to please let a group of able Alumni know the amount and if that would solve this issue.

  2. All I can say to the young man is this: Hey be glad you're not a faculty member. You'd be treated worse than worse. But someone needs to help this man out. He represented us well, and will continue to do so. Townsend just jacked up everything when he was here. And I say, again, good damn riddance. He only came here to make some $$ and then carried his sorry arse away.

  3. Even if the new AD doesn't have a record of the young man's scholarship or agreement with Townsend, common sense says its better to pay for one known star than several unknown stars like the football players, softball, basketball, etc. As far as I'm concerned the verdict is still out on the new AD based on some of his decisions and statements.

  4. This is why you always get things in writing. If it ain't on paper, verbal agreements won't hold up. I hope the University can find some funds to help this young man out.

  5. If this student-athlete is in good standing academically, then the university need to step up. Dr. Ammons stated that as of July 2, 2007, he assumes all responsibility for university affairs. Well, it's again time to step up. Afterall, we throw away more money on some of the goose egg associates over in the athletics department than the law should allow.

  6. FAMU is run by the Administration, for the Administration. The students and faculty are a troublesome complication and at best serve as a convenient excuse for the Administration to draw their huge salaries.

  8. It's a damn shame this young man has to go through this. Ammons and the sorry AD need to do something to resolve this problem.. Like I stated before the real Ammons is about to come out. And the alumni of FAMU will truly be dissapointed with him. Just call North Carolina Central University.

  9. As was stated earlier. GET THINGS IN WRITING !!!

This kid, bless his heart, could be mistaken.

  10. 6:44 PM, The real Ammons is already out. We're no longer on probation. Also, NCCU has one of the best Law Schools in the country, the enrollment increased under Ammons, and they received record research grants. Florida BOG & the State think he is doing a wonderful job.

Cut out the N-word mess and lets move forward.

  11. I spoke with a local Alumni President of NCCU and she said that Ammons was great and she wish they had him back.

  12. My child is a former FAMU athlete. Sometimes our kids don't do what they're supposed to do and thenm turn around and blame the Financial Aid Office. Before we jump to conclusions, lets get all of the facts.

Some of you black people make me tired.

  13. 9:42, you know you're right. It's always, always the administration's fault -- many times it is -- but just as many times as it is the admin's fault, the fault lies with the student who did not do the necessary thing to get him/herself properly situated. It's always easier to blame someone else, when we know good and doggone well it was our own fault from jump.

  14. It's sad that some of you FAMU folks are still blind. But just wait and see. And when it happens, you better believe I will be the first to tell you, I told you that was going to happen.

Quit hollering about the sky is falling, the sky is falling and go find a job!

  16. 12:59 PM, While you're waiting & wishing for something negative to happen to FAMU, why don't you go find something to do with yourself? Surely you're not as worthless as you sound. Are you?

  17. I believe the student. There were several agreements with the old AD that are no longer being honored.

It should not matter old AD vs new AD. Students are the customers and they should be provided customer service. In a year he will be an alumnus and we will want him to give back. Over and over again we graduate students who are mad as hell at FAMU and won't give back.

We have money to recruit new students to FAMU we need to take care of current students. The swim team has been in disarray for years. All of the resources are going to football and the rest of the sports get nothing.

Dr. Ammons have this student's tuition paid so we can get money from him as alumnus. He obviously loves the school. This kid could have gone any where are as swimmer. As he stated, he could have left the university like others when the swim program was cut. He showed his loyalty and love for the university. Can't we come up with $3000 to pay this kid's tuition?

  18. This kid has nothing in writing, he could be lying.

Some of our get over artist BIG TIME. With the current financial state of the athletic program, Bill Hayes is right to pinch every penny.

  19. Can RN verifiy the amount that the student owes????????

    ReplyDelete
  20. And they want to know why we don't give back when we graduate....why I don't care about supporting "rattler approved" vendors, and why I'll never set up a trust fund for FAMU...

It isn't hard to remember all the nights that I spent worried about my classes not counting, or the times that famu housing put boxes in the dorm rooms of students that hadn't paid their bills in full.

  21. ^^^ Try not paying your rent and see what ^^^
landlord does. Try not paying your mortgage and see what the bank does.

  22. 8:03 I hear you, but as a graduate it is up to us to make it better. So I have asked RN to find out how much this young man needs several times on this blog. It was a time that, that was the point of this blog to bring about positive change for FAMU. Therefore, if I could get the amount I could begin trying to secure the funds to assist this young man. I also remember the days of late net checks and the long lines and it has all made me stronger. I wish to be the change I see in the FAMU Nation!
