The National Marrow Donor Program recently recognized FAMU for recruiting more than 400 African Americans into its donor registry. The university ranked in the top three among all historically black colleges and universities.

“We have done a lot of work with Relay for Life and Big Bend Cares,” said Saundra Inge, director of FAMU’s Student Activities. “We are broadening our reach and providing new experiences for our students."

FAMU’s Bone Marrow Drive was led by Alex DeJarnett, coordinator for Greek life and community involvement, and William Johnson, a FAMU residence director. NMDP presented both with awards for their hard work.

“It was a great opportunity for FAMU to rise to the challenge,” DeJarnett said. “I was glad the faculty, staff and students responded.”

According to NMDP, on any given day, more than 6,000 men, women and children are searching the registry for a life-saving donor.

“We are looking at dates this spring to do it again,” DeJarnett said. “We are already thinking of other ways to raise the number of donors.”
