A University of Florida professor accused of diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars for his, and his family's, personal gain had his campus office raided last Wednesday by federal investigators.

The FBI searched the campus office of of UF Professor Dr. Samim Anghaie Director of the Innovative Nuclear Space Power and Propulsion Institute (INSPI) in connection with the investigation. As of Wednesday, neither Anghaie nor his wife Sousan had been arrested, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tallahassee said.

UF suspended Samim Anghaie after the campus raid. A warrant alleges money from NASA was diverted into the accounts of Samim, Sousan and their sons, Ali and Hamid and used to buy six vehicles ranging from a 2005 Toyota Sienna to 2009 Subaru and homes in Gainesville, Connecticut, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa. Some money was used to buy stocks and the proceeds to buy land in Alachua County, the warrant alleges.

UF Spokesman Steve Orlando said Anghaie was suspended with pay pending the results of the case.

"We're cooperating with their investigation," Orlando said.

A search of his office in the UF Nuclear Science Building started around 8 a.m. and lasted until mid-afternoon.

Anghaie started at UF as a researcher in 1980 and has worked for the university since that time, except for a stint at Oregon State University from 1984 to 1986. He currently makes about $111,400 a year from UF.

Sousan Anghaie, 54, is president of New Era Technology. The warrant alleges that she intentionally misrepresented budget information on NASA contracts and submitted multiple false invoices for workers.

  1. I believe UF is one of the most corrupt universities in America. I'm calling on the worthless BOG to call for a forensic audit of this tax wasting university.

  3. I'm not gonna jump to any judgement but, I think this is one of a few cases and this one is a few years in the making.

  4. As I recall, this is the first time, in recent years, someone has diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars from a UF account into their own bank account.

  5. If you think misappropiation is only at UF, think again. It happens at all schools, and esp. at FAMU.

  6. Especially at FAMU ???

Or it only reported on the front page when its at FAMU?

This one guy seems to have taken in one swoop an amount larger than all FAMU missappropriations in the past 10 years.

  7. This is not the first time that someone at UF has misappropriated or stolen funds. It's a regular occurrence, but reporting it would make the BOG, Florida Legislature, and the State of Florida look bad. They sweep it under the rug, the media looks the other way, and nitpick FAMU. Investigate this wasteful university right now!!!

  8. Why isn't this plastered everyday in the Hypocrat ... Much like they've tried to stretch out the "misappropriation" of Ticket Office funds at our Ticket Office?

RN ... Who do you suggest/recommend we (all) need to contact directly in order to get a response from the Hypocrat - and essentially have this blasted from the rooftops, and all over the Net as if this happened at FAMU?

  9. 9:43 AM, I agree. Contact the BOG & ask them to appoint an auditor to conduct a forensic audit of UF finances.
