Senior Nakia Linson, MEAC Long Jump Champion |
Three of the four championships came from the Lady Rattlers.
Senior Nakia Linson won the long jump with a leap of 6.02m (19-09.00), after
placing second last year. Junior Sasha-Ann Lebert won her second
consecutive discus championship with a throw of 45.67m (149-10). Junior Shawanna
Steplight won the most grueling event of all, the heptathlon. She took
first place with 4,693 points.
The FAMU women finished second, overall. Head Coach Darlene
Moore said that although the team had aimed for the title, they were happy with
the way they performed.
“I really wanted to win this championship,” Moore said. “The MEAC is a very, very strong track conference that has produced world champions and Olympians. That’s the magnitude of the competition you are competing against at the MEAC.”
For the men, Elias Chesire, multiple time winner of MEAC
Most Outstanding Athlete award, finished his career with FAMU with a convincing
win in the 5000m run. He finished with a time of 15:15.17 and completed his
FAMU career leading the Rattlers to back-to-back MEAC Cross Country
Championships. He also finished second in the 3000m steeplechase.
Chesire and his teammates tied for fifth, overall.
