Tyms has played in a total of 11 games this season. He had
three offensive snap counts when the Pats pulled out a 35-31 victory over the
Baltimore Ravens in their January 10 second round playoff game. Although he did
not see any action in his team’s 45-7 American Football Conference championship
game win against the Indianapolis Colts, he still has a chance to take the
field in Super Bowl XLIX.
The Boston Globe wrote the following in a feature article on
Tyms on January 6:
Tyms was undrafted out of Florida A&M, but spent time with the 49ers and Dolphins practice squads in 2012 before signing with the Browns last season, when he appeared in seven games. Despite having to sit out the first four games this season for what he said is an Adderall prescription, Tyms was coveted by the Patriots, who signed him July 27.
He may have missed the first four weeks of the season — he
also wasn’t allowed to practice, nor permitted to work out at the team’s
facility — but Tyms has tried to make up for that lost time with work ethic,
confidence, patience, and optimism.
“I’ve really been impressed and encouraged with Brian
throughout the course of the year,” said offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
“He’s a young guy that obviously is trying to create more and more
opportunities for himself.
“Practices extremely hard, one of the hardest workers we
have. He’s in the building early. He’s in the building late at night studying
film, working at his craft to become a better player.”
Even though he came to camp with no experience working with
Brady, it didn’t take Tyms long to show how he can help the offense. In four
preseason games, Tyms led the Patriots in receptions (11), yards (188), and
touchdowns (2).
