FAMU student Aiyana Ishmael, a junior in the FAMU School of Journalism and Graphic Communications recently had an article published on Teen Vogue.com   Ishmael’s article, “How Plus-Size College Students in Tallahassee Shop,” highlighted challenges some women face when trying to find fashionable clothing in cities such as Tallahassee.

Ishmael, a native of Miami, FL, serves as editor-in-chief of Journey Magazine, FAMU's award-winning student magazine. She also represented the FAMU last summer as a student fellow at the Online News Association (ONA) HBCU Digital Media Fellows Program, and was elected to ONA's board of directors

“I hated not having any options...my goal was to bring awareness to people that didn’t know this was a struggle,” she said.

Ishmael said the article she wrote for Teen Vogue was her way of showing other plus-size students they are not alone. Ishmael article drew the attention of the general manager of H&M's Tallahassee location who contacted her to inform her of changes coming to the store and their  plans to include more plus-size options.

“Now, that’s journalism,” said Michelle Ferrier, Ph.D., the embattled dean of the School of Journalism and Graphic Communications. “Aiyana continues to shine in her writing, her leadership and her service to other students. We couldn’t be more pleased to see our students and their skills recognized by major publications and organizations."

Teen Vogue describes itself as "the young person’s guide to conquering (and saving) the world. Teen Vogue covers the latest in celebrity news, politics, fashion, beauty, wellness, lifestyle, and entertainment." The magazine is circulated to more than one million subscribers worldwide.
