FAMU received a bomb threat on its main campus Thursday afternoon.  The bomb threat was phoned in around 12:46 p.m., according to a brief statement from the university.

The FAMU  Police Department along with the Tallahassee Police Department searched all campus buildings before confirming that there was no bomb around 2:50 p.m.

The FAMU bomb threat follows a rash or recent bomb threats made to HBCUs.  Earlier this week, Prairie View A&M University in Texas received a bomb threat to its campus.  Howard University received a bomb threat on February 28 (the last day of Black history month), its third since August 2022, and its ninth since January 2022.

According to the FBI, more than 57 HBCUs had received bomb threats last year.

A little over 20 years ago FAMU had its main campus terrorized by several days of pipe bombings.  The culprit, Lawrence Lombardi, was caught and sentenced to 54 years in prison.

Since then, FAMU installed an elaborate system of surveillance cameras to protect students, faculty, and the campus community.

This is the first bomb threat at FAMU in over two decades.
