FAMU is scheduled to begin demolition of Gibbs Halls "the grand dame of men's residence halls on campus" on Monday, according to a FAMUINFO email sent out Friday afternoon.

Gibbs Hall was built in 1955 and named in honor of State Rep. Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs, who is credited with passing legislation in 1885 to establish the State Normal School for Negroes, which later became FAMU.

Gibbs Hall, in its heyday, housed about 305 male students.
It was last renovated in 1989.

The building suffered some structural damage in 2019 due to a water leak which closed its basement and first floors for awhile.  The building underwent $3 million in repairs to correct the damage.

The dorm was "decommissioned" a few years ago and recommended for demolition.  The university said at the time that the building needed more than $31 million in repairs to modernize it to today's housing standards.  That number has likely increased since then.

Just last month, FAMU announced plans to construct three new residence hall with a combined 2,000 beds of student housing at a total cost of nearly $240 million.
