A team of students from Florida A&M University's (FAMU) School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) has been awarded the 2024 Coca-Cola HBCU Sports Production grant at the 45th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 21, in New York City.
The winning project, a seven-minute documentary titled "Field Trip," pays homage to the late Pro Football Hall of Famer and FAMU alumnus Ken Riley. The documentary was a collaborative effort by SJGC seniors Jonathan David, Darnell Walker Jones, Germanie Bozeman, and Tristian Hutton, along with criminal justice senior Jalon Howard.
This marks the second consecutive year that Jonathan David and his fellow FAMU students have won the award, which includes a $40,000 grant. The contest is sponsored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) and the Coca-Cola Company.
The documentary was completed under the mentorship of Edward Thomas, General Manager of FAMU TV-20, who provided guidance and support throughout the project.
The win at the Sports Emmy® Awards is a testament to the students' hard work, creativity, and dedication to storytelling. It also highlights FAMU's commitment to excellence in journalism and media production.
