FAMU graduate Larry Johnson Jr., has been appointed the seventh president of Bronx Community College (BCC), after receiving approval by the City University of New York (CUNY) Board of Trustees. Johnson, previously led CUNY’s Guttman Community College.
Johnson’s tenure at Guttman saw historic milestones, including a 29% enrollment surge in Fall 2023—the highest in the college’s 13-year history. Under his leadership, Guttman launched cutting-edge programs in cybersecurity, secondary education, and online health information technology, while securing over $5 million in grants to bolster student support and career pathways. His strategic initiatives, such as the Guttman Forward 2028 plan, positioned the college as a model for equity-driven education.
Johnson earned his undergraduate degree in English literature from FAMU before completing advanced degrees at Clark Atlanta University and Florida State U. His career spans leadership roles at Phoenix College—where he became its first Black president in 2018—and institutions in Georgia, Florida, and Missouri. At Phoenix, he forged partnerships to support adult learners and secured federal funding for STEM research, reflecting his focus on accessibility and innovation.
At BCC, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) with 6,800 students from nearly 100 countries, Johnson is expected to lead the college into its next chapter and bridge academic excellence with community needs. “I’m honored to collaborate with BCC’s scholars and leaders to shape opportunities that transcend campus borders,” Johnson said. a
