According to the Famuan on Friday the FAMU Student Supreme Court ruled that Cyrah Hawkins, who was elected Mr. FAMU last spring, lacked the required GPA required to serve.
The Famuan wrote, "The Student Supreme Court has since received official documents stating that Hawkins is ineligible to hold (the) position of Mr. Florida A&M University. Therefore, this serves as a writ of injunction to be effective immediately to Hawkins prohibiting him from holding the title and position of Mr. FAMU."
Hawkins has the option to appeal the Court's decision.
See: Mr. FAMU casualty to subpar GPA?
There shouldn't even be a "Mr. FAMU." Who, other than a pretty boy, would want to be called such a thing anyway? Only someone who thought his average looks would be good enough to outrun the required gpa. How about a "Mr. Academic"? Now, that's a title that he should have aspired to claim. "Mr. FAMU." Please.
ReplyDeleteThe Mr. FAMU position was established by the Student Senate through a bill introduced by Andrew Gillum. There have been some good Mr. FAMUs, especially Charles Wesley Lattimore, who was the very first.
ReplyDeleteHaving a Mr. FAMU is a good idea because it's important for HBCUs to show positive role models to other young men across the nation.
ok, so Andrew Gillum introduced the bill, and the point is?
ReplyDeletehow positive is having to strip the guy of the position b/c he can't hold a required gpa? I say, "to show a positive role model" is to showcase a guy who at least keeps up academically and a Senate organization that is aware of the gpa beforehand.
So what's next? If he can prove the required gpa after this semester, can he serve in the spring? Does someone take his place in the meantime?
ReplyDeleteAnd another thing: Are GPA checks being done on the rest of the Royal Court? SGA? He may not be the only one ineligible to serve. (I sincerely hope that isn't the case!)
I would think most of the "fun" of being Mr. FAMU is during the football season, particularly Homecoming.
ReplyDeleteI just hope the young man re-focuses on his academics and earns his degree.
This is exactly the type of dude I would not want my daughter to meet. Slow on the academics and possible future job responsibilities---but Daddy, he looks good! Try striving for school title of Mr. GPA and forget the GQ and popularity crap.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about you, but I did my part to enhance FAMU's reputation as a party school during my time, and I turned out okay, and so did just about all of my running buds.
ReplyDeleteDon't be too hard on the young man, I'm sure he is embarrassed enough.
I must come to his defense although not a supporter when he campaigned his case is plausible. The statutes "do NOT" state that one must maintain a 2.8 to hold the position, only possess it at the time of elections. And to set the record he went from a 2.92 to a 2.733 so lighten up on him pple!
ReplyDelete^^^Well, well. If this is true, then he has a better gpa then 90% of the football team and band. So what is the problem?
