Barely a year into a six-year contract to serve as Florida Atlantic University's chief fundraiser, Lawrence Davenport is leaving with $578,000 in severance pay.

The figure is raising eyebrows among some in the university community, who wonder whether an often cash-strapped state institution can afford the expense.

His contract states that if he is fired, he receives two years of pay, as long as he remains unemployed. But he is entitled to no severance pay if he leaves voluntarily, the contract states.

  1. Very interesting, and four years ago the VP of FAU falsified records and pleaded guilty to this in order to give the outgoing President of Florida Atlantic University a BRAND NEW CORVETTE! Where was the outrage then? There was none and there is none about this half-a-million dollar pay OFF! Why because FAU is not an HBCU! Like my 80 yr old aunt says " oh to be white and do what ever you want"! And I am sure this happens at FSU, UF, UCF (remember the SGA buying brand new cars and skyboxes for their friends, oh but of course you don’t), and all the rest of “those” schools.

  2. That is just why we are going to have to start airing some of the stuff that is going on at their schools. The papers will not print it because the editors are alums of these institutions. They have no allegiance to FAMU.

  3. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE ABOUT MY TAX DOLLARS BEING SPENT ON A GOLDEN PARACHUTE FOR A FAU ADMINISTRATOR AND BUYING A BRAND NEW RED CORVETTE!!! I AM OUTRAGED AND DEMAND A FULL CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION...

This is exactly what we won't hear from the FSU crowd...

UF Foundation's theft loss near $1-million, audit says
    By Wire services
    Published December 6, 2003

GAINESVILLE - The former chief financial officer for the University of Florida Foundation is now suspected of stealing almost $1-million from the organization, according to an audit presented Friday to the school's board of trustees.

UF inspector general Nur Erenguc said she thinks Kenneth E. Hillier used the money to make credit card payments and buy cameras, computer equipment and other items. He was arrested and fired in September for allegedly stealing $700,000.

UF could recover some of the stolen money, officials said, because after his arrest, prosecutors froze Hillier's bank account containing $400,000 to $500,000.

Hillier, who worked for the foundation for 15 years, faces five counts of grand theft.

He did not return a call to his Jacksonville home Friday seeking comment.

  5. We come from a culture that like to embarrass each other.

I'm sure MANY do not like what the IP has done or the way she's conducted herself -- HOWEVER instead of working our internal alumni channel (if one exists) we create a PUBLIC BLOG and air out EVERYTHING!

We have made it EASIER for the press with the leaked memos and public griping.

Reporters are LAZY, so all they need to do now is peruse through this site and the student site to get "leads" and soon it'll be front page. I bet there has been MORE front page Democrat stories since this blog was created than before.

FSU and other universities have a code -- keep it internal -- do not embarass the University.

Our code is "embarrass to prove I was right". Who cares about the long term effect.

I'm not saying end Rattler Nation -- I'm just pointing out that this site shows up in google searches about FAMU and is free and open to the public.

So lets start getting more positive stories out -- help out our university. No one has mentioned the journalism students who cleaned up at the Florida AP awards! Beating out UF, UM and other majority schools...where's that story??? -- prob on the desk of our cracker jack PR office.

  9. Don't blame the messenger; blame the message. If the people who really and actually gave a hoot about FAMU, as they, oh, so claim to do, then they wouldn't write all of this mess. The site is being misused by many people who don't care who reads the comments as long as they get their stupid comments online. The blog has served a wonderful purpose; it's the people, not the blog, that offers the awful news about our university for all to see. Peole need to check themselves and try to understand why they are so angry at the world. They use this site to vent. I think RattlerNation is a great site; many of the bloggers have mental problems.

  10. Hello ANON 8:08

FAMU just spent 50 million off the books! 2.7 million stolen, 1.7 million missing, etc, etc. The FAU Foundation Fundraiser is leaving the school and his contract may or may not call for two years of salary. FAMU is just plain "crookin"! Show me a contract with whomever stole the equipment and athletic receipts. You people are STUPID. No wonder FAMU is doomed!

The blame for the current state of affairs is not the problem of this blog or the alumni who vent on this blog. It is because of the current administration, the BOTs included, have failed to provide communication regarding the university. As a result, alumni, students, faculty and staff have begun blogging. Many are frustrated, angry and feel disenfranchised by this presidency. So we blog because they don't listen.

Castell rode into Tallahassee on a black horse promising to fix all of our ailments, only to disappoint, lie and dupe the very people who trusted her. You can't get a straight answer from her, the chair, or members of the board who are just as clueless as the masses.

Why don't you stop blogging and write that person sitting in the Ivy Tower, Lee Hall, room 400 and ask her why so many people are blogging about FAMU in this light? Then ask her what she plans on doing about it. AND the response will be not a damn thang.

    So we blog!

  12. HAHAHAHAHAHA, another black guy stealing the State's funds. I got money in the Bank.......I cant wait to see what Obama has in store........

  13. Challis Lowe really pushed some clowns during the presidential search process. That Howard Johnson guy she recommended lost his job before the search was even over. And now, this Davenport person has just been shown the door.

With all the horrendous audits at UMES, Thelma Thompson is probably next.

This is really just a damn shame. I don't even want to think about what FAMU would have gotten if James Ammons hadn't applied...

Excuse me! It looks like this severance package was approved by the President, BOT and the Foundation. How else could the university write a check with the Foundation chair's signature?

Now on the other hand, Mr. Hillier is definitely white and he definitely did not have the approval from anyone to write checks totaling almost $1M and deposited into his personally banking accounts. The police and others still have not quite figured out how much Hillier actually stole.

  15. Sought of like Bobby Bowden's son who milk several Floridians out of millions for a fake casino in South Africa.

Or Kenneth Lay and Enron. Jebbie and two of his appointees invested almost a 1/3 of Florida's State retirement funds in Enron causing Florida to take a huge financial blow. However, we don't call that stealing. It's called white collar crime; misappropriation of funds; embezzlement; defalcate; skim; purloin; peculate; misuse; or filch.

  16. The man probably got in deep for attempting to come here and deal with you NEGROES. Why would anyone in their right mind leave paradise for this mess? Why are we so vicious and vindictive of your own kind? You don't have facts. White people do not give money out for nothing. DO NOT HATE THE PLAYER; HATE THE GAME.

  17. I agree with BADSR. This America where people are allowed to contractual receives anything they can negotiate for. Davenport did not have gun and a mask. Obviously, he sat down at a table and negotiated his severance and came out the victor. That's the American way. As stupid as this administration is, he would have taken us for a million. GIVE THANKS!!!!
