With more and more Americans turning to the internet for their daily news, FAMU’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication is preparing a new digital media program to train students for this cutting-edge field.

The J-School has received Board of Trustees approval to initiate both a B.S. and M.S. in Digital Media. The undergraduate major will instruct students in areas such as graphic design and animation. The master’s degree will “appeal to students who wish to work in the industry as well as those who wish to teach at the high school or community college levels.”

The digital media program will build upon a variety of successful existing courses. The J-School already trains students in digital photography, digital video recording, and graphic design through post-production computer software. The digital media sequence will combine these strengths into a new degree.

FAMU’s digital media graduates will be prime candidates for not only reporting jobs, but also production and editing positions at Hollywood studios and private corporations.

  1. Smart. And more thinking in this manner will be good. Other programs can appreciate the opportunities.

  2. There are some opportunities in the technology education program in the COE.

  3. Would be great if the J-School collaborated on this venture with CIS, and maybe SBI. Somehow, we've got to begin breaking down the silos which prohibit collaboration between academic units, especially where it makes sense.

  6. 11:18 I agree, a person that knows the business, education, and instructional side of this degree is a marketable person. Why is doesn't the BOT ask these questions. Better yet, why aren't these questions asked before they get to the BOT. Answer: Personal Agenda.

  7. Have you ever watched a FAMU BOT meeting? Most of the trustees don't even read the briefing materials beforehand. They just sit there asking questions about things they should already know.

  8. Should we expect (or agressively pursue) support for the program by Rattlers w/film and acting experience, thinking Raintree Productions(Wil Packer, Rob Hardy), Anika Nona Rose and T'keah (can't spell last name)?
Also include the ESPN VP (Clinkscales?) on that list?

  9. 9:22am the COE H@** NO! That College is the oldest and worst on campus and trust me when I tell you no one and I mean no one wants to have anything to do with it if they can help it! I would strongly encourage the J-School keep it that way if they want to continue to be great!

  10. AMEN 9:27 a.m.

This is a duplication on programs offered in Education. There should be a collaborative effort. We desperately need efficiency on this campus!!!

The J-School is in serious trouble they serverely lack leadership which negatively impacts faculty performance and student success!

  11. @10:51 I think you mean the School of Education. I think the J-School is in great shape and Dean Hawkins is an amazing leader. College of Education on the other hand has some SERIOUS problmes they need to deal with. Most of the students in that major whom I've spoken to will be the first to run off the list of woes on that side of the campus.

  12. Which College or school on the Campus do you think is in the best shape?

  13. Let's play the ranking game! I'm sure many will disagree but...

    1)Pharmacy
    2)COE
    3)CESTA
    4)Architecture
    5)Allied Health
    6)J-School
7)SBI- would have been ranked higher if dean had been placed and AACSB situation had been resolved; I'm told that they are still looking to 2011 for accreditation
    8)CIS
    9)School of Nursing
    10)Environmental Sciences Institute

I understand that this might be a very sensitive subject to some but this is just based on observation, word of mouth, and current media coverage- not expert analysis. More than anything, it is not based on the overall popularity of the program.

    Now you make YOUR list:

    #1 to #10
