At 6:12 a.m. today, Rattler Nation broke the news (via its
Twitter feed) that FAMU Athletic Director Kellen Winslow, Sr. had tendered his
resignation and that former AD Nelson E. Townsend was
slated to step in as an interim replacement. Townsend is 73 years-old.
At a press conference
that began at 3:30 p.m., Mangum went on to confirm the information in the
second part of the original Rattler Nation breaking news advisory, announcing
Townsend as the new interim AD.
President Elmira Mangum later confirmed Winslow’s
resignation to a group of press representatives who approached her on the
campus after a morning meeting of the Department of Athletics.
Winslow led the athletic department for about seven months
this year. His replacement, Townsend, previously served two terms as athletic
director of FAMU from 2006- 2007 & 1985-87. In addition to his service to FAMU, Townsend also served as
athletic director at Maryland Eastern Shore University and the University of
Buffalo for 12 years.
