Rattler Nation has learned that IP Castell Bryant and Provost Deborah Austin have met to discuss a reduction in force plan for the university, that's "layoffs" for us common folks. While the layoffs are expected to be university-wide, we have learned that SBI will lose 15-18 faculty members. Other colleges and schools to be impacted in a big way are Arts and Sciences, Education, CESTA and Pharmacy.
Reportedly, the University is trying to sidestep the legal process to get around the one year notice required by law. We understand that plans calls for the pink slips to be sent out next month, before the new fiscal year starts July 1. In the mist of the turmoil several young and upcoming professors have decided to cut their losses and move on to other universities.

Softball teams win Championship
The FAMU softball team hammered Delaware State, 4-3, to win the 2006 MEAC Softball Championship this morning. With the win, the Lady Rattlers will earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
It's getting to a point at which I'm afraid to read any news about FAMU. But nonetheless, I'd rather have the painful truth (through Rattlernation) than no information (from the Capital Outlook).
ReplyDeleteKeep posting the truth, no matter how much it hurts. It's the only way we'll be able to save FAMU.
Well this news is killing me. I don't know how much more I can take.
ReplyDeleteWhy are we laying off folks with all of this money she saved?
ReplyDeletedeclining student enrollment = the need for less faculty and staff. plain and simple.
ReplyDeletePlain and simple. Who's fault is it that we have a declining enrollment.
ReplyDeleteGive me a break. Those dumb-ass BOT need to explain how they gave this incompetent, no plan, master of destruction a damn bonus and raise for destroying our beloved university.
There's nothing plain and simple about this.
The amount of legislative funding/tuition dollars that FAMU has lost as a result of the enrollment drop is far more than the projected "surplus" numbers.
ReplyDeleteMembers of FAMU's faculty and staff have been warning the university's leaders about the severe financial consequences of cutting the recruitment program. However, the warnings have fallen on deaf ears among the administrators and lead BOT members.
Castell Bryant claims that our financial house is clean and that we are sitting on millions of extra dollars. In reality, FAMU is experiencing one of the most dangerous financial crises in its history.
The lies can't cover up the hard financial facts. The truth is coming out and it's going to hurt worst than what we saw after the 2003 financial statement was submitted late.
Layoffs? After the university upped the president's salary and reported a multi-million dollar surplus? Things were not even this bad when FAMU was allegedly "in the red."
