Nikki Giovanni, a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator, will be Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) fall commencement speaker. The commencement is scheduled for Friday, December 14, at 6 p.m. in the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center. Giovanni is currently a Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Inspired by the civil rights, womens rights, and black power movements, Givianni has become one of leaders for civil and human rights, always insisting on presenting the truth as she sees it. The 1967 Fisk University honors graduate went on to attend Columbia University and the University of Pennsyvania.
She published her first book of poetry, Black Feeling Black Talk, in 1968, and within the next year published a second book, thus launching her career as a writer. Early in her career she was dubbed the "Princess of Black Poetry," and over the course of more than three decades of publishing and lecturing she has come to be called both a "National Treasure" and, most recently, one of Oprah Winfrey's twenty-five "Living Legends."

ReplyDeleteThis is news to me! Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteSome MF are just so unapreciative.
...and some Mfs don't know how to spell (and don't put the mispelling on a typo). Maybe if you read something other than a blog, like maybe a mfing newspaper or book, even, you'd be mfing informed.
ReplyDelete...misspelling...(now, mine was a typo, but yours is a "not knowing.")
ReplyDeleteWell I'm nowhere near Tallahassee, and this is news to me. I'm sure that's going to be an awesome address. I'd love to hear her speak!
