Despite facing an expected $400,000 budget gap for the current year, the FAMU athletic department is paying its part-time Deputy Athletic Director, Genyne Boston, PhD, an annual salary of $77,991, according to public records. This equates to nearly $81 per hour for approximately 19 hours of work a week or 47 percent of her time.
Dr. Boston, by her own admission, has no experience as an athletic administrator. Rather, Boston’s background is in academics where she is a tenured English professor. In addition to serving as the Deputy AD, she also works as the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs for which she is paid an additional $87,983. She spends 53 percent of her 40-hour week in university administration, records show. Her two part-time jobs pay her a total salary of $165,974.
FAMU has not advertised the Deputy AD’s position in the last three hires so there is no position description online. However, AD John Eason made the following public statements about the previous, full-time, Deputy AD last January, “when you look at the deputy position, you want someone with proven leadership skills. You don’t want to be in a position where you bring in someone who has not been in a leadership position. You want someone with a proven track record.”
From Boston’s linkendin page, her pervious leadership and management experience stems from serving as Chair of the Department of English. The associate provost role, appears to be more of a faculty liaison position.
So how did someone with no background in athletics land the number two position in the department? And how is it that this part-time employee earns more than each of the two full-time associate ADs?
